The Kallergis family, who were descended from Nikiforos Fokas, hoisted a flag similar to the naval flag of later years, bearing the inscription "IN THIS SIGN THOU SHALT CONQUER". The nine stripes of the flag can also be found in the coat of arms of Nikifors Fokas. However, according to I. Nouhakis, the flag also bore an eagle.
